What is XML?

XML, or Extensible Markup Language, is a standardized protocol used to describe data.

This versatile language makes it possible to present and store information in a structured way. In addition to the public Internet, XML is also a valuable tool within organizations.

Why Use XML?

Data structuring: XML (Extensible Markup Language) allows data to be organized into elements and attributes, creating a hierarchical structure that is easy to understand and manage.

Platform independence: XML files are platform-independent. This allows them to be used on different operating systems and in different applications without compatibility issues.

Readability: The use of clear tags and structure makes it easy for both technical and non-technical users to interpret and understand the file's content.

Data Description: XML is not only suitable for storing data, but also for describing data structures. It can be used to include metadata and documentation about the data.

What is CSV?

CSV stands for “Comma-Separated Values” and is a simple and widely used file format for storing and exchanging structured data.

In a CSV file, data is stored in text format, with each row of data separated by a comma and each column identified by a specific value.

Why Use CSV?

Simple structure: The text-based format makes it possible to store data in a clear and structured way, without the complexity of other file formats.

Wide compatibility: One of the main advantages is that almost any spreadsheet program, database, or text editor can open and process CSV files. This makes it easy to exchange data between different applications and systems.

Accessibility: CSV files are human-readable, which means they can be opened and understood using a simple text editor. Both technical and non-technical users can review the file's contents.

Suitable for large datasets: CSV files can contain large amounts of data without compromising performance or file size. This makes them ideal for storing and sharing datasets with many records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you curious about how this solution can enhance your Exact environment? Check out the answers below to frequently asked questions about the integration, features, and capabilities within Exact.

Can the Alistar XML Importer automatically retrieve XML files?

Yes. The XML Importer can automatically download XML files via an HTTP request. To do this, download profiles are configured to specify the source locations.

Can the XML Importer import multiple XML files at the same time?

No. The XML Importer actually processes files in batches, one after another. The next file isn't started until the previous import is fully complete.

Does the XML Importer support a fixed import order?

Yes. You can specify the order in which XML files are imported. This is useful, for example, when accounts receivable must be imported before sales orders are processed.

Do you have to use a separate folder for each XML type?

No. The XML Importer can automatically recognize which XML topic is being provided based on the contents of the XML file.

Can the XML Importer import XML files into multiple Exact Globe installations?

Yes. With import profiles, the same solution can process XML files for multiple Exact Globe installations, even if they are running on different SQL Server instances.

Are imported XML files saved automatically?

Yes. XML files that have been successfully imported are automatically moved to an archive folder (HistoryDir), so they remain available for review and reference.

Can the XML Importer automatically delete old archive files?

Yes. You can set the number of days files should be kept in the archive. After that, they are automatically deleted.

Do you receive a notification if an XML import fails?

Yes. If import errors occur, the XML Importer can automatically send an error report via email to one or more designated recipients.

Can the XML Importer save invalid XML files separately?

Yes. XML files that are not processed successfully are automatically moved to a separate error folder (ErrorDir) so they can be easily reviewed.

Does the XML Importer work without the Exact Globe XML modules?

No. Within Exact Globe, the correct XML server modules must be available in order to actually import XML files.
