Imagine this: you want to create a new blog post, translate it into three languages, and place it in the correct workflow step. Today, that involves clicking, switching between screens, copying, and pasting. It takes about half an hour, if all goes well.
Now you just say it. One sentence, and your CMS takes care of the rest.
That's the promise of the new DatoCMS MCP… The great thing is: it’s not just a distant promise. It’s already working today (in beta), and you don’t need a developer to use it.
What is MCP?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard that allows AI assistants such as Claude or ChatGPT to connect directly to external tools, in this case DatoCMS.
What's the difference between this and a regular AI chat? A chatbot talk with you, an assistant through MCP does We handle things for you: creating records, translating content, customizing fields, managing assets. No extra steps, no copying. You request it, and it happens instantly in your project, using your actual content.
Set it up in five minutes
There's nothing to install, and there are no API tokens to copy and paste. Setup involves a one-time login:
- Add the connector. Give it a simple name. The MCP runs at a single fixed address:
https://mcp.datocms.com. That's the URL you add. - Sign in once using OAuth. Click on Connect, log in with your DatoCMS account in your browser.
- Choose your projects. You decide which projects the assistant will have access to. From that point on, he'll know who you are and what he's allowed to access.
Done. No technical hassle. If you can type a message and paste a URL, you can do this.
What to Do With It Right Away
Once the connection is established, the range of possibilities becomes surprisingly broad. Here are just a few examples:
- Create a new blog post with specific content, in a single assignment.
- Translating batch records into multiple languages at the same time.
- Update one field across all records of a certain type.
- Moving content through your workflow steps: from draft to review to publication.
- Reorganize your media library.
The strength lies in the multi-step assignments. Tasks that would normally take half an hour of clicking can now be completed with a single question.
The demo: a pizzeria in Berlin
Theory is fun, but the demo brings it to life. You can view this demo of DatoCMS MCP here. In the guide, Claude—who was connected via the DatoCMS MCP—builds a completely new project from scratch: a fictional pizzeria in Berlin.
And not just half-heartedly. The assistant will take care of it schedule (the structure), the content myself, and the localization in several languages. After that, there will be a few more workflow adjustments Done: right from my phone, using Claude for Mobile. From a blank project to a multilingual site—mostly while on the phone.
That’s the moment when you feel that something has shifted. It’s not about ‘AI helps you a little,’ but about ‘AI lays the entire foundation, and you make the adjustments.’
Hold your horses
Two things to keep in mind. It's currently in beta (June 29, 2026). The DatoCMS team says so themselves, and they’re actively asking for feedback. That’s no reason to wait—it’s an invitation to help shape the project early on.
You're in charge. An assistant that publishes content independently and edits fields in bulk is powerful—and therefore something to use with care. Let it do the heavy lifting; reserve judgment for yourself. The ease with which you save thirty minutes is the same ease with which a mistake can quickly snowball.
In conclusion
The best thing about this step is how unremarkable it feels to use. No new interface to learn, no manual to plow through. Just say what you want, in your own words, and your CMS follows. That’s exactly how technology should work.
