Inventory Management and ERP: The Perfect Match

Inventory management—it’s probably your favorite part of the job. Many companies dread the annual inventory count. All items must be physically counted and checked against your inventory list. This often means working on weekends or temporarily closing the store. However, with an efficient ERP system, you can significantly reduce the workload.

The Right Software

With the ERP Software for Building Materials and Technical Wholesale You have standalone warehouse management software with all the benefits of Microsoft Dynamics NAV. That means you manage all warehouse processes from within BuildMaster: you track what comes in, what goes out, and—most importantly—what you need to reorder. You can easily record and enter all this information using barcode scanners. That way, your data is always up to date.

With Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central That’s actually a lot easier. That ERP package keeps track of which products you purchase from which suppliers and how much you need to order to qualify for a discount. The program therefore gives you suggestions on what to order and when. Not to mention the software’s predictive capabilities: the system tracks which products you sell the most during which periods, allowing it to provide even more accurate suggestions.

Our inventory management software also supports lot tracking, warehouse management across different stock locations, and shelf organization (with digital shelf labels, so you only have to make an adjustment once), centralized and decentralized picking.

The annual inventory count—heaven or hell?

There are a few tricks to keep your inventory count as simple as possible. The cycle counting method, for example, involves spreading the workload over different periods. This way, you check a specific section of your warehouse several times a year—for example, monthly. This has several advantages:

  • No shutdown period or overtime. Business operations will continue as usual.
  • By thoroughly reviewing a specific product category each time, you'll see where you can improve. That way, you'll spot missed opportunities more quickly!
  • It is also possible to check some of the items—for example, twice per fiscal year—and thus have a much more accurate inventory overview.

But you can improve your inventory management even further with a modern, up-to-date ERP system:

  • With the right ERP software, you can print inventory lists by product category, bin location, aisle, or shelf location—or a combination of these.
  • You can use a handheld device to scan the barcodes and enter the counted quantity. These scanners are fully integrated with your ERP system, so there’s no need to retype the data (which could lead to errors)!
  • With the latest version of Microsoft Dynamics You can enter the correction amount directly on your tablet or smartphone. You're working directly in your ERP system, so you can make changes right away.
