AI is no longer just a thing of the future. With tools like Microsoft Copilot and Power BI, we’re already using artificial intelligence today to gain insights faster, automate repetitive tasks, and work smarter. But there’s a new player on the horizon: AI Agents.
What Are AI Agents?
AI agents are digital assistants that can perform tasks autonomously based on a specific objective. Unlike traditional AI tools that perform a single task (such as summarizing a text or drafting an email), agents can combine multiple steps, make decisions, and even control other tools.
Think of a police officer who:
- automatically categorizes customer inquiries and forwards them to the appropriate colleague,
- prepares a quote based on CRM data,
- or generates a report and shares it with the right team.
How do they work?
An AI agent consists of three components:
- Purpose – What needs to be accomplished? (e.g., “Process all incoming leads and schedule an appointment.”)
- Context – What data or systems are available? (CRM, calendar, email, …)
- Promotions – What is the agent allowed to do? (read, write, plan, report…)
The agent uses this input to make decisions and take action on its own. This is often done in conjunction with tools such as Microsoft Copilot Studio or Power Platform.
