ESE – End of Support for Basic Authentication for SMTP in Office 365

Exact Synergy Enterprise

Microsoft has announced that support for Basic Authentication on SMTP within Office 365 will end in September 2025. This applies to sending emails (SMTP). Support for incoming email ended in 2023.

Within applications such as Exact Synergy In enterprise environments, SMTP with Basic Authentication is often used.

In the application, go to Modules > HRM > Configuration > General > Settings > ‘Server’ section > ‘Email’ field. If the SMTP option is selected here, the discontinuation of Basic Authentication will affect your situation. In that case, you’ll need to switch to a different sending method, such as Microsoft Outlook or Exchange Online.

When you select Exchange Online, the Exchange Online settings are displayed.

  • Enter the Tenant ID in the Tenant ID field.
  • Enter the application (client) ID in the Client ID field.
  • In the "Client secret" field, enter the client secret (value).
  • In the "Sender account" field, enter the sender's email account. For more information, see Sending Emails via Exchange Online Using OAuth.
