History: From Navision to Dynamics NAV
Navision
Navision (now Microsoft Dynamics NAV) is an ERP and accounting software package that was developed in Vedbæk, Denmark, and in 2002 by Microsoft was acquired.
Microsoft Business Solutions
Navision was added to Microsoft Business Solutions, as Microsoft's ERP division was known at the time. The Dutch importer was based in Barneveld at the time, and the Belgian importer was based in Mechelen.
In the early years, Damgaard’s Concorde was a competitor in the same market—another Danish product developed by former Navision employees in Denmark. Damgaard’s Concorde product was succeeded by Axapta in 1998. Later, Navision and Damgaard merged, until the company was acquired by Microsoft in 2002 and continued as Microsoft Business Solutions. In 2001, Microsoft had acquired Great Plains in the United States, a comparable company and ERP product—essentially the American counterpart to the European Navision. As a result, Microsoft established a significant global presence in the ERP market within two years.
Today, Microsoft's ERP division is called Microsoft Dynamics, and the Axapta, Navision, and Great Plains product lines have been renamed AX, NAV, and GP, respectively.
Microsoft Dynamics technology
Microsoft Dynamics NAV is deployed on the Windows operating system and Microsoft SQL Server. It is developed using the .NET Framework, all of which are core components of the Microsoft enterprise stack.
This provides companies with a highly integrated ERP solution that is tightly integrated from the infrastructure level all the way up to the software. Microsoft Navision can be run on on-premises servers, hosted servers, or in the cloud.
